His Image: Fallen From the “Image of God”
Early in the book of Genesis, we read about the deception of satan leading to man’s disobedience to the commands of God. This disobedience resulted in the fall of mankind from the image of God. The fall came by the exercise of free will resulting in spiritual death – broken fellowship with the Holy God.
After the fall, mankind continued to live in his body, possessing a consciousness but the spirit was dead. The mind was dominated and controlled now by his flesh, and the desires of his flesh. The path man chose was a one-way path, with no opportunity to undo that which was done. He could not resuscitate his dead spirit.
The fall brought great calamity to mankind. The fall resulted in a llife alienated from God. It resulted in a life dominated by the flesh bringing with it strife, fighting, wars, maladies and ultimately physical death.
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. – Genesis 3:1-8
The fall brought great sorrow to God. He loves man so much and created man to have fellowship with Himself. He desires the best for man, but He knew this could only happen as man was one with Him. Just like when Jesus had compassion on the lost he encountered, “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” – Matthew 9:36, so too God has compassion on fallen mankind.
Due to God’s great love for us, He would not allow man’s fall to be the end of the story. He would do what man could not, restore His Image within mankind.
BUT BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT LOVE FOR US, GOD, WHO IS RICH IN MERCY, MADE US ALIVE WITH CHRIST EVEN WHEN WE WERE DEAD IN TRANSGRESSIONS-IT IS BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED.
