In the Face of Difficulty…
Jesus told the disciples to get into a boat and sail to the other side of the lake. He wanted to be alone, so He stayed by Himself on the beach. When the disciples left, He went up on a mountainside to pray.
During the night Jesus came down from the mountainside to the beach. He saw the disciples out in the middle of the lake struggling with their boat because the wind was blowing hard against them. The waves were high and rough.
So Jesus went out to them, walking on the water. He walked on the water as if it were dry land! When the disciples saw Him coming toward them on the water, they were afraid. They did not know who or what it was.
Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. After dismissing the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone. But the boat was already over a mile from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. Around three in the morning, He came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said and cried out in fear. Matthew 14:22-26
The disciples were in trouble on the sea yet they were right where Jesus told them to be. Why did Jesus put them in this difficult situation? He had something to teach them.
Jesus did not take away the storm as soon as he saw the disciples in trouble. He chose to show His power over nature as he walks on the water. Eventually Jesus Tells them do not fear.
When you find yourself facing difficult situations have you ever considered you may be right where God wants you? It is at these times that Jesus comes to us the same way as he did to the disciples saying do not fear. Take the difficulty as an opportunity to strengthen your faith and draw closer to God. Ask Him to show you the lesson to be learned and then heed Jesus’ words – Have courage! … Don’t be afraid!
Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 14:27
SO DO NOT FEAR, FOR I AM WITH YOU; DO NOT BE DISMAYED, FOR I AM YOUR GOD. I WILL STRENGTHEN YOU; I WILL UPHOLD YOU WITH MY RIGHTEOUS RIGHT HAND.
