Your Daily Dose of Boldness – Jesus Teaches How to Pray

Jesus Teaches How to Pray

In the Gospel of Luke, we read of Jesus spending many hours in prayer regularly – After His baptism (3:21), in the wilderness (5:15), on a mountain (6:12), and even alone (9:18). This may be why, in Luke 11:1 His disciples ask Him to teach them how to pray. He goes on to share 4 components and 2 postures of prayer in what has been called the model prayer.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’”– Luke 11:1-4

2 Postures of Prayer:

Jesus begins His teaching with instruction on how we should approach God in prayer. Verse 2 – “Father” indicates we should come to him as a child would to a father – a Heavenly Father! Prayer should be relational. If there is not an established relationship, there is no basis for prayer. Prayer should be personal as a child to a Father. Verse 2 – “Your kingdom come…” indicates we should be seeking first the kingdom of God. The purpose of prayer is to accomplish God’s will. His name, kingdom and will should have top priority. Our prayers should reflect a desire to see the Lords will done, to see His kingdom come to fruition in our lives and in the world around us. It is tragic that there are many people today who look upon prayer as an instrument for the accomplishing of their will upon the earth. All too often pray become our wish list…give me, give me, give me… instead of a way to get God’s will accomplished in us and all around us.

4 Components of Prayer:

The first component of Jesus’s model prayer is adoration. Verse 2 – “Hallowed be your name.” It is to say that there is no one like God, He is completely unique. He is to be honored and greatly revered.

The other three components of Jesus’s model pray include petitions or requests of God:

  • Verse 4 – “Forgive us our sins…” A request for forgiveness. This is a recognition of our willful act of disobedience to God.
  • Verses 3 & 4 – A petition for all others is implied with the use of “us”
  • Verses 3 & 4 – “Give us each day our daily bread.” …”Lead us…” A petition for yourself
  1. Lord please meet our physical (earthly) needs – daily bread.
  2. Lord please meet our spiritual needs – lead us not into temptation
  3. Lord please do this daily! – Daily can also mean necessary so as to imply a request to provided what is needed/necessary to sustain life.

Spend some time in prayer today!
