Your Daily Dose of Boldness – Prayer: Parable of the Friend at Midnight

Prayer: Parable of the Friend at Midnight

In Luke, chapter 11:5-8, Jesus teaches his followers to pray with boldness (passion) and persistence. Unlike other parable in scripture, this not a parable of parallelism. We are not to equate any of the characters with GOD. We should only look at the conclusion that Jesus is specifically drawing out in the story.

To understand this parable, one must understand what a typical household looked like in New Testament days. In the custom of that day, a whole family lived together in a one-room house. On one side of the house was a raised platform where they all slept on mats; down on the ground were all their animals — possibly a cow, sheep, and even goats. There was no way the man could come to the door without disturbing the whole household.

Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.

– Luke 11:5-8

On the flip side, it took a lot of boldness for the man in the story to shamelessly ask his friend in the middle of the night for bread. This persistence also has a historical root. In Jesus’ day it was culturally expected of a host to provide a meal for any guests in their house. This man’s persistence was born from the necessity to provide for their guest.

Jesus was making the point that God often waits for our passionate persistence in prayer. It isn’t that God is reluctant and needs to be persuaded. Our persistence doesn’t change God; it changes us, developing in us a heart and passion for what God wants.

Take the time to be passionate in your prayers. As you pray, allow your persistence to change your heart bring it in line with God’s desire.
