Build the House for Tomorrow
Read the story below, by an unknown author, and see how it applies to your life:
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family.
He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor.
The carpenter said yes, but in time, it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.
When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said, “It’s my gift to you.”
The carpenter was shocked! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.
Working in the construction industry, I see many contractors and carpenters taking shortcuts. They do this because they know that the house they are working on will never be theirs and therefore they don’t put the necessary care into the details.
Although this is common in the construction industry, I also see this across the board. Many of us are living our lives as if we’re not currently building our future, heavenly homes. We take shortcuts, we choose immediate satisfaction over eternal blessings, and we stick band-aids on challenges that need long-term solutions.
What if we realized that our current attitudes and choices are building the ‘house’ we will live in tomorrow? Wouldn’t we, like the carpenter, do things differently?
Build Wisely!
Everyone has heard the saying, “You reap what you sow”. With each choice we make, we not only building our earthly homes, we are also building our eternal homes.
So, begin to build wisely. Build your foundation on solid ground and make God’s plan your blueprint.
