Your Daily Dose of Boldness – Fine Line Between a Rant and a Rave

Fine Line Between a Rant and a Rave

It’s hard to be patient when you see people doing and acting in ways that you know are destructive to them and those around them. We all get hung up on this, and we tend to tip the balance toward the rant when it comes to our fervent beliefs.

Case in point: At the beginning of this month, as I do at the beginning of each month, I conducted my CEO Fireside. I was reminded of the verse above last night when my VP of Marketing emailed me. She’s editing the CEO transcript for an eBook and mentioned that I put my clients and students through the wringer. She referred to my 90-minute discourse on being tired of all the excuses I hear day in and day out as to why people cannot, nor will ever be a success. I hear every excuse under the sun, and so on this last CEO Fireside I doled out a powerful dose of tough love. I’m sure I hit a few nerves, which was my intention, but I also hope I shook and woke some folks up.

When you feel passionate about something, it’s very easy to cross the fine line from raving to ranting. And when it comes to religion, it’s hard not to come out swinging as a prizefighter for God!

However, God is explicit in 2nd Timothy on how we should share the Gospel. He explains that people will be clamoring for false teachers who will say what they want to hear and who will spread myths and will shape doctrine for their own purposes in the end times. You can be the beacon of light and a bearer of truth in these dark times. God lays out a step by step way to do this here:

  1. In 2:14, there is to be no word-wrangling. Why? It is “useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.”
  2. In 2:16, there is to be no “worldly and empty chatter.” Why? Because “it will lead to further ungodliness.”
  3. In 2:23, we are to avoid “foolish and ignorant speculations.” Why? Because “they produce quarrels.”
  4. In 4:4, try to stay away from those who “turn away their ears from the truth.” Why? They “will turn aside to myths.”

God wants you to be a raving fan of the Gospel, and He wants you to be courageous in your words of defense for His everlasting truth. Still, he also wants you to be patient and compassionate to the non-believer or even the confused believer. He wants you to be gentle in the face of their opposition, and that, my friends, can be very hard to do.

My call to action to you and myself this week and in the future is to “preach the word, be ready in season and out, reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.” Bring others to the truth but remember to do it in a gracious and God-like way.

AND THE LORD’S SERVANT MUST NOT BE QUARRELSOME BUT MUST BE KIND TO EVERYONE, ABLE TO TEACH, NOT RESENTFUL. OPPONENTS MUST BE GENTLY INSTRUCTED, IN THE HOPE THAT GOD WILL GRANT THEM REPENTANCE LEADING THEM TO A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH…
