God of All Comfort
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
This passage reminds us that God is a compassionate and comforting Father, who is always with us in our times of trouble. It also encourages us to use the comfort we receive from God to comfort others who may be going through similar difficulties.
The theme of God’s comfort is echoed in several other passages in the NIV:
- Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This verse emphasizes God’s nearness to us when we are hurting, and his willingness to save and comfort us.
- Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” A necessary reminder that God is always with us, providing us with a safe and secure place to turn to in times of trouble.
- Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God’s presence with us and his willingness to strengthen and uphold us when we are feeling weak and afraid can bring us comfort.
Call To Action: As we receive comfort from God in our own times of trouble, let us remember to extend that comfort to others who may be going through similar difficulties. This can involve reaching out to offer words of encouragement or practical support, or simply being a listening ear and a compassionate presence for those who are hurting.
Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for your compassion and comfort in our times of trouble. Help us to receive the comfort that you offer, and to extend that comfort to others who may be going through similar difficulties. Give us the strength and wisdom to be a source of support and encouragement to those who need it most. Amen.
FOR JUST AS WE SHARE ABUNDANTLY IN THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST, SO ALSO OUR COMFORT ABOUNDS THROUGH CHRIST.
