Going From the Head to the Heart

I had the opportunity to listen to a speaker talk about the art of giving. He was asked if he gave any part of his substantial earnings from his books and speaking engagements to a charity. He said that he did give, but that the giving wasn’t the most essential part of the act. It was the motivation and emotion behind the giving that really mattered.

He said that he used to give because he was supposed to. Because of this, there was no heart behind the action, just critical, calculated thinking. Others would see him give and know that he was a good and charitable man, and therefore think better of him.

It wasn’t until he was in a serious car accident that the motivation behind this action moved from his head to his heart and his thanksgiving was done in the right way. He began to give with thanks and while he gave, he praised God for the ability to continue to give. Being human and inherently flawed, we often do things to appear better than we are. We basically give to get.

So, remember to give with an open heart. Give to the homeless, the depraved, and to those who have less than you do. Pray that they will ultimately find God. In turn, your giving will move from your head to your heart.
