Living a Transformed Life Part 1: Surrender and Renewal

The American pastor and author, A.W. Tozer once said, “We’re still trying to give orders, and interfering with God’s work within us.” I believe one of the hardest acts of a Christian is absolute surrender. The term “surrender” has a bad rap. It conjures up images of cowardice, submission, and weakness. So, instead of surrender, we use maneuvers like compromise, agreement, and pacts in our relationship with God. “If you give me this… I’ll give you that.” We interfere with God’s work through us by trying to control the outcome.

You Sacrifice More When You Surrender Less. What does that mean exactly? By giving less to God, we sacrifice much more. We sacrifice understanding God’s best for us. We lose out on the richness of a life well-lived. Instead, we take the wheel and drive, even if it means we’re careening off a cliff. We would rather experience the pain of defeat at our own hands then the joy of surrender into God’s.

Surrender is what Jesus was asking when he said, “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.” It’s not an act of helplessness or defeat to surrender to God, but an act of love. God did not put us here to fend for ourselves. He does not ask us to do the impossible but to allow Him to enact the impossible in our lives through Him.

Transformation can only begin when we stop being the centers of our own lives, stop trying to control everything around us, and finally say, “You must do this… because I can’t.”

Once we surrender, the next transformational characteristic can take place—a renewal of thought. Allowing God to take the reins changes the way we think altogether. Remember, sin begins in the mind, long before it plays out in the body. Once we surrender to God’s will and begin reading the Bible and surrounding ourselves with Christian-worthy media and fellowship, our thought processes change completely and become more aligned with the thoughts of God.
