Part 3: What Are We Waiting for?
Christmas is all about anticipation. Everything from the
Thanksgiving holiday on builds to this single holiday. Stations
start playing Christmas Music, stores roll out their Christmas
Marketing extravaganza, and people begin the stressful, “hairpulling-
out” hunt for gifts. Christmas is everywhere, except
that it really isn’t anywhere at all.
Every year, I think we get a little further and further away from
the reason for the season, and instead of waiting for the “true
gift” of Christmas, we’re merely waiting for the next wrapped
gift under the tree.
What is the Gift?
God humbled himself and went from the infinite to an infant
to give us the ultimate gift of eternal life. The wondrous gift of
God is that regardless of our “goodness” or “badness” we all
get the same gift. We don’t have to earn God’s love and
salvation; we only have to accept it. Wow! Those words never
get old to me. I know that if I had to “earn” God’s love and
fellowship, I would fall short—I can be pretty hard to love at
times (ask Jaclyn), but God’s promise to all of us is that it’s
there for the taking—we just have to take it!
This week especially, and always emphatically, remember that the
real present is that His “presence” is with us year-round.
We don’t have to anticipate the holiday to finally “encounter”
Him. His birth on Earth was the invitation to have a personal
and real relationship with Him. We just need to RSVP in our
hearts and minds.
