Steeper the Hill, Stronger His Push
Perception is everything. In fact, researchers at the University of Virginia found that when looking at a hill, most people perceived it to be far steeper than it really was, especially if they were tired or carrying a heavy load. When the researchers asked the participants to estimate the slope, test participants consistently misjudged it, thinking a 10-degree slant was about 30 degrees, and a 5-degree slope was nearly 20 degrees.
Does that sound familiar? Most often, when we’re burdened and exhausted, even the smallest of molehills can be viewed as impossible mountains. At these points, giving up and throwing in the towel sounds much more attractive then soldiering on. This is the point where we need the encouragement of God’s Word the most.
Isaiah wrote, “The Creator of the ends of the earth neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might – He increases strength” (Isaiah 40:28-29).
Because it’s so easy to misjudge life’s difficulties, we need the courage and wisdom of God to keep us going when we’re tempted to quit.
I know in my own life and career, there were many a time I thought the hill looked longer and steeper than it really was. In 2008, while the economy plunged, my “hill” became staggeringly high. That was a dark period in my life, but it was also the year God gave me a solid push up the slope. When I felt the most burdened, His hand became steadier, and my personal and professional direction took a turn in the right direction.
If life looks challenging, I encourage you to take a step of faith. Let God give you a solid push in the right direction and help you up those difficult hills.
THE LORD IS THE EVERLASTING GOD, THE CREATOR OF THE ENDS OF THE EARTH. HE WILL NOT GROW TIRED OR WEARY, AND HIS UNDERSTANDING NO ONE CAN FATHOM. HE GIVES STRENGTH TO THE WEARY AND INCREASES THE POWER OF THE WEAK.
