Your Daily Dose of Boldness – The Curious Christian

The Curious Christian

Have you ever been told to stop being curious when it comes to your faith? Have you ever been advised to give up the analytical part of your Christianity and accept things as they are? Have you ever been told that by doing so, you are genuinely practicing faith?

This is what happened to my wife in her childhood religion. She was told to dampen down on her curiosity and merely believe the tenants of her church. Guess what happened. Her curiosity only grew, her dissatisfaction with these surface answers only strengthened, and her faith faltered.

Why? Because faith without curiosity flounders.

Barnabas Piper, a present-day Christian author, defines curiosity this way: You and I were created to create and discover, created for the vocation of reflecting God’s image.

When you stop being curious; when you stop wanting to create or understand something new, you stop reflecting God’s image. Your purpose becomes stunted, and you miss all the divine connections God has made available to you. When it comes to our relationship with God, it is our curiosity that will drive us to discover more of His truth and blessings. It draws us closer, allowing us a more intimate knowledge of our Creator and His plan for our lives.

This is exactly what happened to my wife. She could never settle into a faith that encouraged blind trust, and so she ventured out. She studied the Bible with a voracious thirst, she read and compared books from other religions, and she prayed long and hard. Her curiosity transformed her and allowed her to create a relationship with God. I was lucky enough to watch this transformation happen. I’m even more fortunate to love a woman with a strong and vibrant faith. It was only an abiding curiosity that allowed her to get to this point.

I encourage you to question, want more, search for, and be sought by God. Only then will you truly understand real faith and an authentic relationship with God.
