The Family Matters
Several years ago I spent a week and a half in California with my family. We visited California Adventure, Disneyland, and SeaWorld, among other attractions. It was a whirlwind family trip that was long overdue!
On our way back, my little family and I were walking swiftly through the airport toward our departure gate and I found myself overwhelmed with the picture. My then 4-year-old Aundreya was independently pulling her Disney Princess suitcase with wheels. Even at this young age, she carries herself with so much confidence and meaning. In the meantime, her twin, Preston, not to be outdone, was also pulling his Cars suitcase, and keeping in close step with sister. Our then three-year-old Harrison deftly carried his Toy Story Backpack and held my wife’s hand. I was weighed down by all the remaining carry-ons. Although the trip was a crazy adventure, and both Jaclyn and I were exhausted by the end of it, that one memory of the small Arnold troop walking through the San Diego airport happens to be one of my favorites from the entire trip!
There is a divine unity within a family. We often forget this in our day-to-day lives. We have work, errands, household chores, engagements, meetings, church responsibilities, etc, etc, etc. That trip with my family was a necessary reminder for my wife and me. It put everything back into perspective, and although we honor God in our home daily, it helped us remember to also honor each other.
I wholeheartedly believe that the home and family is where true faith in God is inspired and nurtured. I know that being a Christian father is no small feat and I don’t take the job lightly. It’s a God-given responsibility and although I have much to learn still, I enjoy every moment of it!
