The Meaning of Christmas
The other morning while Jaclyn and I were getting ready for
work, we had one of those morning “news” shows on in the
background. You know, the kind where just a smidgen of news
is mixed in with a whole bunch of fluff. As I brushed my teeth,
the anchor was interviewing an “expert” on perfect gift ideas
for your loved ones. They talked about diamond earrings, gold
watches, leather chairs, and trips to hot vacation destinations.
They ooohed and aaaahed over fur coats and exquisite leather
On our drive to the office, I thought about those “perfect” gift
ideas, and I remembered that we are so very far removed from
the true meaning of Christmas and the true definition of the
“perfect gift.” Although it is the season of giving, we often
forget that the real “perfect” gift was not boxed and intricately
wrapped with a large red bow. And it was not given with the
intent to receive. God’s gift was given to all humanity with
perfect love and mercy.
In Corinthians, Paul called it the “indescribable gift.” The gift
that staggers the human imagination and leaves you awestruck
and speechless. How can you adequately put into words the
very life, death, and resurrection of God? How can you put
into words the true meaning of Christmas?
As we celebrate Christmas and rip into the gifts under the tree,
don’t forget that the true, living, and breathing gift of God
cannot merely be unwrapped and dropped on top of the pile
of gifts gathering at your feet. Instead, it is felt deep within.
God’s blessing is something that changes the very fabric of
your being, giving you lasting peace, reassurance, and
ultimately a home after this life. And honestly—how can you
describe that? No words can even come close!
THANKS BE TO GOD FOR HIS INDESCRIBABLE GIFT!
