The Source of Abundant Life
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
This verse contrasts the purposes of the thief (Satan) and Jesus. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, while Jesus comes to give us abundant life. This abundance does not refer to material possessions or worldly success, but rather to the fullness of life that comes from being in relationship with Jesus.
This verse is echoed in several other passages in the NIV:
- Psalm 16:11 says, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” The joy and fulfillment that comes from being in God’s presence.
- Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse highlights the contrast between the consequences of sin (death) and the gift of eternal life that comes through faith in Jesus.
- 1 John 5:11-12 says, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” John reinforces the idea that true life comes only through faith in Jesus.
Overall, John 10:10 and its accompanying passages remind us of the importance of placing our trust in Jesus as the source of true life. In a world that often promises fulfillment through material possessions or worldly success, we are reminded that only in Jesus can we find the abundant life that we were created to enjoy.
