What is Your Birthright?
I was reading in the newspaper the other day how couples either cope, or in many cases, don’t cope in the face of financial or medical crises. Many couples mentioned how friends and family counseled them to divorce their spouse and try it all over again with a new mate. Wow… talk about having little faith or confidence in each other. When I think about everything Jaclyn and I have been through over the years… well, I’m fortunate that she stuck it out, and even more than that, I’m blessed that the experiences have forged a stronger and more faithful bond between us.
Which brings me to God’s gift, or our “birthright.” What is the one gift God could give us that would encapsulate His love for us? Many answers may come to mind, but I think the one gift that God has given us is “Confidence.” It’s that “certainty” that we are personally loved and nurtured by God and that each incredible milestone, or even the meanest of hurdles, are meant to bring us in closer proximity to Him. It’s the confidence that even in our loneliest or most dejected moments we are held in the palm of his hand. That we are not carrying the brunt of our circumstance, but only a tiny sliver of its weight.
Not only can we be confident in God, but He can also be our closest and most reliable confidante. We can feel safe inviting Him into our most intimate details and trust that He will still love us no matter what He sees or hears.
Marriage, I believe, is one of the closest earthly arrangements to our divine relationship with God. It can only survive on the gift of “confidence” in each other. I think that is why Jaclyn and I are closer now than we were years ago. We are confident in each other, and we’re comfortable in each other’s confidences. She is well aware of my meanest traits… and let’s just say that I know her at her most “perfect worsts.”
Regardless, I don’t think we would be here if we didn’t first have confidence in God’s will and love in our lives. We can truly love each other because we know and are confident that we are truly loved.
BUT BLESSED IS THE ONE WHO TRUSTS IN THE LORD, WHOSE CONFIDENCE IS IN HIM.
