Your Daily Dose of Boldness – Who Is Your Neighbor?

Who Is Your Neighbor?

Years ago, the kids were watching Mr. Rogers. It was very different from what I remember. Instead of the sweater-clad, kind man from my youth, there was an animated tiger. I was saddened at this and wondered why they didn’t just play the reruns of the man that taught many of us as kids the value of being a kind and compassionate neighbor. The man who once said: “I believe that appreciation is a holy thing—that when we look for what’s best in a person we happen to be with at the moment, we’re doing what God does all the time. So, in loving and appreciating our neighbor, we’re participating in something sacred.”

The First Good Neighbor

Of course, Mr. Rogers wasn’t the first to espouse these values of kindness and compassion. Jesus was our first Good Neighbor. So much so that when Jesus was asked, which commandment was most important by a Pharisee who was considered “an expert in the law” (Matthew 22:34–36), Jesus answered by saying, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second is similar: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37–40).

Jesus gives us two commandments that summarize all the laws in the Scripture. These two commandments deal with our relationship with God and then our relationship with each other. One naturally flows into the other because without having a right relationship with God, our relationships with others will not be right either.

Because this is such an essential cornerstone of Christianity, we’ll spend the next few days discussing what being a good neighbor is. We’ll talk about how to transfer our love for Jesus to others, and why genuine compassion and love are the most critical ways to witness our Christian faith to others.
