Daily Dose Of Boldness

Your Daily Dose of Boldness – Would You Follow Him Then?

Would You Follow Him Then?

The other day I was flipping through the channels and came across one of those Hollywood Insider-type shows where they drag out the dirty laundry on some celebrity. As an at-home audience, we eat that stuff up! We love the gossip, and at times, we even participate in it. Often, we allow these rumors to cloud our perception of another person’s reputation long before they have the chance to prove it otherwise.

As I sat down to write today’s message, I was thinking about what people heard and subsequently thought about Jesus during his time here on Earth. Here are just a few of the rumors that were circulating about Him:

1. He’s an illegitimate child. (John 8:41)

2. He’s a deceiver. (John 7:12)

3. He’s mentally ill. (John 10:20)

4. He’s demon-possessed. (Matt. 9:34; John 7:20)

5. He’s Beelzebub [Satan] enfleshed. (Matt. 10:25)

6. He’s a blasphemer. (Matt. 9:3; 26:65; Mark 2:7)

7. He’s an open enemy to the Law of Moses. (His teachings and practices went against the Bible.)

In addition, His words are regularly misunderstood by His followers (John 21:22-23) and deliberately twisted by His detractors (Matthew 26:60-61).

Now imagine what you would think of someone on Access Hollywood or in People Magazine who got the same kind of bad rap as Jesus did then. Would you follow him? Or would you accept the negative press and turn away from him? Would you not want to sully your own reputation by being linked with his?

Being a public figure, I’ve come up against this too. When I decided to claim God publicly and weekly, I lost some business, and some of my peers in the industry mocked me. But it came down to this: clearly Jesus wasn’t trying to earn brownie points or popular votes during his time here on Earth, so why should I?

Luke 6:26 says, “Woe to you when all men speak well of you.” It seems counter-intuitive, doesn’t it? But the point is, if you wish to serve the Lord and have Him use you mightily, your reputation must go to the cross, just like His did. Not everyone will like what you have to say, and some people may have nothing to do with you when you put your reputation on the line for Christ, but in the long run, you’ll find that that’s more than okay.
