Your User Manual for Life
Wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phones? What if we:
- Carried it around in our purses or pockets?
- Turned back to get it if we forgot it?
- Flipped through it several times a day?
- Used it to receive messages?
- Treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
- Gave it to kids as gifts?
- Used it as we traveled?
- Used it in case of an emergency?
In a study commissioned by the American Bible Society, Barna Research found that 9 out of 10 households own a Bible. Although many of us have one, a lot of us don’t read it daily. So, what are we doing with it? For some, it’s an excellent paperweight, a shelf-filler, a reference book, or a dust-gatherer.
What we used it as it was meant to be used—as a user manual for life. What if, like our beloved cell phones, we used it to find all the answers to all our questions?
In this modern world, we have many authorities, one of them being Google. If you don’t know the answer, you “Google” it. It’s a noun, verb, adjective, and adverb and has quickly become a “Bible” of sorts for the curious mind. Yet, it does very little to feed the soul. What if we “Bibled” all our questions and concerns? What if we used the Bible as the living, breathing authority of God — the first real “Google” to exist and the only one that gets it right every time? How different would our lives and choices be?
I believe if we did this, we would not only be informed, but we would also be constantly renewed. It’s the only place that we can get inside the mind of God and know, without a shadow of a doubt, His will in our lives. Can Google do that?
The Bible is our “User Manual” and equips us to not only survive but thrive in this changing world.
This week, I encourage you to get your Bible out, dust it off if you must, and “Bible” your questions. You’ll find the answers, although very different than the kind you’ll find on “Google,” are very fulfilling and comforting.
FOR THE WORD OF GOD IS ALIVE AND ACTIVE. SHARPER THAN ANY DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD, IT PENETRATES EVEN TO DIVIDING SOUL AND SPIRIT, JOINTS AND MARROW; IT JUDGES THE THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDES OF THE HEART.
