Myth Busting: Part 2 “Christianity Stifles Personal Freedom”

“God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, that you may be able to endure it”

-1 Corinthians 10:13

Many people forego Christianity over the belief that if they commit to the faith, their lives will be filled with much less rather than much more. They think they will be encumbered by so many don’ts and dos that their current quality of life will deteriorate.

So my question to these people is… which quality of your current life are you clinging to? What are you afraid you will lose? Is it drinking and partying all night? Is it swearing? Is it being able to sleep in on Sunday mornings?

The truth is (both spiritually and scientifically) being a Christian is VERY freeing. In just several, of the many, scriptures on the subject, the Bible says:

Galatians 5:1

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.”

2 Corinthians 3:17

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Galatians 2:4

“…our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus…”

John 8:36

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Romans 8:2

“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

And if that’s not enough for you, and you need some outside sources, science from Harvard, Duke and other esteemed universities have found that Christian faith and church attendance are associated with less social isolation, lower risk of substance abuse, lower rates of suicide, greater happiness and life satisfaction.

Does that sound like less or more to you? The truth is Jesus’ way is much more freeing and much less cumbersome than most people think. Clinging to your habits and your vices won’t free you, but allowing Jesus into your life most certainly will. It’s promised and proven. So don’t let the same ol’, same ol’ keep you from the most freeing relationship you’ll ever have. I guarantee you’ll be surprised with the amount of the generous and gratuitous freedom you’ll experience!
