Need a Job?

“Look for people who will aim for the remarkable, who will not settle for the routine.”

– David Ogilvy, Famous Advertising Executive

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” – 1 Peter 2:9-10

As many of you know, when I’m not studying up on, or giving the He’s the Solution message, I’m running a financial company which dispenses private money for real estate transactions. Because of this, I have spent many an hour recruiting, qualifying, and hiring people. One thing I have found is that a well-written job description can cut the fat immediately, while keeping the prime candidates in the hiring pool.

Unlike a specialized job in computer coding or legal counsel, where years of experience puts the contender head and shoulders above the competition, God takes you at face value and will hire you regardless of your past experience or knowledge. And, you don’t have to be a full-time pastor or missionary to serve God. You can serve Jesus in a multitude of ways:

• in your career • your church involvement • your relationships • your decisions • how you live your life

I recently read a funny story about a preacher who was standing at the door shaking hands as the congregation departed. He grabbed one man by the hand and pulled him aside.

The preacher said to him, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!”

The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Preacher.”

The preacher questioned, “How come I don’t see you except for Christmas and Easter?”

He whispered back, “I’m in the secret service.”

God is not looking for covert ministers of His word, rather he’s looking for people to proclaim the Gospel of faith, hope, and peace through actions and words.

He simply wants you to “proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” It’s a clear, focused job description that anyone can do. Yet many of us a struggle with it. Witnessing can be frightening for many people. Yet, it’s as easy as just telling them your story. Tell them where you were before God’s love changed your heart and then tell them where you are today. Let them see how your life has transformed in God’s presence.

William Arnot, a distinguished Scottish pastor in the last century, put it this way:

“To every true Christian these two things may be said: You have need of Christ and Christ has need of you. The simple fact that a Christian is on earth and not in heaven, is proof that there is something for him here to do.”

There is definitely something for you to do here. The questions is, Are you ready to take the job?
